Steelers reportedly request to interview 49ers' Klay Kubiak for head coach job originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
San Francisco defensive coordinator Robert Saleh already is a hot commodity in a chaotic NFL coaching carousel this year.
Now, another assistant on Kyle Shanahan’s staff is garnering some interest as well.
The Pittsburgh Steelers submitted a request to interview 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak for their head-coaching vacancy, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported Thursday, citing a source.

Kubiak, 37, is the son of Gary Kubiak, who won Super Bowl 50 as the head coach of the Denver Broncos and also coached the Houston Texans (where Shanahan was an assistant for four seasons).
The younger Kubiak, meanwhile, has been with the 49ers since 2021, working his way up from defensive quality control coach to his promotion to offensive coordinator before this season. Klay’s older brother, Klint, is the current Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator; he is another popular head-coaching candidate in the ongoing cycle.
In addition to Saleh’s five interview requests, the Steelers’ interest in Kubiak now means six different NFL teams are looking to talk with one of San Francisco’s assistants amid the 49ers’ playoff run. Granted, this is nothing new for Shanahan and his staff — Saleh has been hired away once before, along with former coordinators Mike McDaniel and DeMeco Ryans.
Nevertheless, should the 49ers advance to next weekend’s NFC Championship Game, the Faithful might not be thrilled by the idea of both San Francisco coordinators taking time away to interview with other teams.
