In the clearest signal yet of the NFL's future direction, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft declared Tuesday that the league will push for an 18-game regular season paired with a mandate for every team to play one international game annually—a move he framed as essential to maintaining long-term labor peace.

Speaking on the Patriots' flagship radio station, Kraft tied the expansion directly to revenue growth needed to support skyrocketing player salaries. "Every team will go to 18 [games] and two [exhibition games] and eliminate one of the preseason games," Kraft stated. "Every team every year will play one game overseas. Part of the reason is so we can continue to grow the cap and keep our labor happy."

Kraft, a senior voice among league owners, issued an implicit ultimatum: “So long as we can keep growing revenue, we can keep long-term labor peace.”

The proposal would effectively package 16 international games each season, featuring all 32 franchises, as a vehicle for global media rights, sponsorship, and merchandising growth. This aligns with Commissioner Roger Goodell's previously stated vision of the game becoming truly global, potentially featuring up to 16 international contests annually.

The NFL Players Association has previously pushed back on adding an 18th game, citing player health and safety. However, with the current collective bargaining agreement set to expire in early 2031, Kraft's assertive comments signal that league owners view this expansion as non-negotiable for future financial stability.

The move represents the league's most aggressive play yet to replicate the global revenue streams of properties like the English Premier League and secure the funds needed to support quarterback contracts approaching $90 million annually.
