Worried Danielle Collins and Brad Gilbert share concerns over Taylor Fritz ahead of the Australian Open

Taylor Fritz’s start to the tennis season was far from ideal as he suffered multiple losses at the United Cup.

The United States might have reached the semi-final of the competition, but Fritz picked up losses against Sebastian Baez, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Hubert Hurkacz.

Fritz’s only victory at the Australian event was a narrow win against Jaume Munar, which went to a deciding tie-break.

Two of America’s finest pundits have voiced their concern for Fritz ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year.

The American suffered three losses and looked to struggle with his knee throughout the Australian tournament.

Gilbert, who has previously coached Andy Murray and Coco Gauff, said he worries for Fritz at the Australian Open.

“Taylor Fritz 1-3 in the team competition and nursing a bit of a knee issue. He said he wasn’t able to play any practice sets.

“When you’re struggling a little bit, I feel like a Slam, especially on the men’s side, it’s two tournaments. Get through that first week, especially if you haven’t played!”

Fritz is a previous Australian Open quarter-finalist, having reached the last eight of the Grand Slam in 2024.

Danielle Collins says she is ‘worried’ about Taylor Fritz

Gilbert is not the only tennis pundit to voice concern for Fritz following his displays at the United Cup.

Danielle Collins, who is still a pro on the WTA Tour, said: “I’m a little bit worried about Taylor right now, with the performance at the United Cup.

“He played some solid tennis at times, but ultimately just wasn’t competing the way we normally see him in those big moments. And I do think he was struggling a lot on returns in a couple of those matches.”

Fritz faces a tricky test against Valentin Royer in the first round of the Australian Open, which could be a potential banana skin for the American.
